ONK Axel: Jeffrey Dewulf excels!
2014 April 26 – Axel: After weeks of preparation, the day of judgment was finally here. The ONK circus settled in Axel, Zeeland, with an impressive field of participants.
The rush hour was kicked off by the 85cc pilots. We saw a holeshot for Jorge Prado Garcia in the first heat. However, the Spaniard was quickly overtaken by Jago Geerts. The man from Balen took the lead and never relinquished it. Behind him, another duel took place between Spaniards for second and third place, a duel that was decided in favor of Sergi Notario Lopez after a crash by Prado Garcia. In the second heat the scenario was approximately the same as in the first heat. It is the Spaniard Jorge Prado who is the fastest out of the starting gate, but after a few laps it is the Belgian Jago Geerts who takes the lead in an authoritarian manner.
In the 125cc we saw Max Engelen take the holeshot. The man from Maarsbergen (NED) was able to hold off the in-form man Davy Pootjes for a while until Engelen made the mistake. Max Engelen resumed the battle in second, the place where he also finished. Dani de Vries finished ahead of Cyril Genot, who returned after a bad start. The British Conrad Mews completed the top five of the first heat. The second heat seemed to be another Davy Pootjes show until a delay about 7 to 8 minutes dropped him back to second place. Max Engelen took over the lead, fought off a resurgent Davy Pootjes and won. Max Engelen not only wins the second series but also the day's victory in the ONK against Axel.
The first MX2 round of the day can be summarized in three words. Head start, Herlings, Win. Fortunately, there were still Jordi Tixier and Romain Febvre who in turn battled it out for second and third place. A fight that was settled in favor of Jeffrey Herling's teammate, Jordi Tixier. Aleksandre Tonkov and Petar Petrov completed the top five of the first heat. In which Brent Van Doninck finished eighth. For the MX2 second round we did not get a holeshot from Jeffrey Herlings this time, this honor was reserved for Aleksandr Tonkov. However, Jeffrey Herlings immediately took over command. A position that the Brabander never relinquished. In fact, the KTM Red Bull pilot made it a true demonstration by completing some laps more than 7 seconds faster around the course. Romain Febvre finished second ahead of his teammate Aleksandr Tonkov. In the daily rankings, Herlings walked away with the largest bouquet of flowers, ahead of Romain Febvre and Jordi Tixier.
MX1 could count on a nice starting field. In the first heat the holeshot went to British Husqvarna pilot Nathan Watson. The Briton, who yesterday descended from the canceled Foxhill to Axel, led the first few laps until the duo Tyla Rattray & Joel Roelants had enough and took off. In turn, they made it an interesting spectacle. Roelants rode to Rattray, released a bit again, rode again to Rattray and released a bit again to finally end up in second place on the wheel. Jeffrey Dewulf finished third.
Our Briton Nathan Watson had terrible luck on the last lap of the first series and came to a standstill, without fuel. This meant he could not crown his brilliant series with a result. This moved De Reuver to fourth place and Klein Kromhof to fifth.
Once again we got an interesting competition story with different leaders. Jeffrey Dewulf took the holeshot with his Yamaha ahead of Jens Getteman and Joel Roelants. The 24MX Honda pilot Getteman pushed for a few laps and went to and over Dewulf to lead the pack for a few laps. The advanced Tyla Rattray, the winner of series 1, crushed Getteman's dream of making a comeback after a few laps. No victory for Jens Getteman, but a nice fifth place behind Klein Kromhof, Brakke, Dewulf and Tyla Rattray. In the daily rankings we saw Tyla Rattray on the podium ahead of Jeffrey Dewulf and Herjan Brakke.
