Jeremy Van Horebeek takes the Italian MX1 title in extremis
'Our Jerre' just keeps doing it. After winning the world title for national teams in Teutschenthal last year, Jeremy Van Horebeek now also takes the Italian MX1 title. This in the very last match of the championship.
On his brand new Yamaha factory bike, Van Horebeek shows that he is in better shape at the start of this year than he was last year. He showed his best side in the Italian championship. In the last race of the MX1 championship, Antonio Cairoli fell during the start. This opened doors for our compatriot. Jeremy rode the soul out of his body to overtake Steven Frossard at the end of the series and thus move on to second place. This second place immediately earned him the Italian title. The series victory went to Frossard's teammate, Gautier Paulin. These two Frenchmen immediately show that they are formidable title candidates.
In the MX2 class the title also went to Christophe Charlier. This is because Jordi Tixier was simply not at the start. Swiss Arnaud Tonus, who is considered Herlings' big opponent this year, won the MX2 series with ease. That means that the Swiss has 2/2 for this season. Because previously he also won the opening match of the Italian championship. Julien Lieber also took action for the first time. The factory Suzuki rider finished a solid 10e place. With 48 seconds behind Tonus. So it looks like Lieber is doing a good job of getting rid of his injury year.
In the super final for the ELITE championship we had a French-Kawasaki party. Gautier Paulin and Steven Frossard finished in first and second place. New MX1 champion Van Horebeek was allowed on the podium. An injured Cairoli finished fourth. It is not yet clear what exactly Cairoli has, his ankle is swollen and needs ice. But the first match in Qatar does not seem to be in jeopardy. The best MX2 rider in this super final was Dylan Ferrandis on an 8e place. Julien Lieber has dropped out.
The title in this separate ELITE championship is still for a decisive Cairoli.
Finally, there was also a Dutchman at the party in Italy. Davy Pootjes won the day classification for the 125cc's with a second and first place. Lorenzo Ravera and Ricciardo Righi were allowed on the podium.
