Herlings and Cairoli win Qualifying Races in Lierop…
Today we had the Qualifying Races for the Grand Prix of Benelux in Lierop, the Netherlands. It is the last GP of the season and in Lierop we were mainly looking forward to the return of Jeffrey Herlings. The MX2 world champion only decided on Friday that he would start in Lierop.
At the start of the Qualifying Race MX2, Herlings was immediately at the front of the line. His compatriot Glenn Coldenhoff was in second place and KTM-Red Bull teammate Jordi Tixier was in third place. For a while it looked like Herlings would not be able to keep the lead. Because Coldenhoff and Tixier went along with ease through the De Herselse Bossen. But towards the end of the Qualifying Race, Herlings managed to take control of the race and had a four-second lead over Glenn Coldenhoff at the finish. Tixier came third ahead of Ferrandis and Tonus.
In the MX1 there was no size for Antonio Cairoli. He was in the lead from the start and controlled the entire race. The surprise in this Qualifying Race came from Shaun Simpson. The Scot started fifth and then picked up Van Horebeek, Desalle and Bobryshev to finish second behind Cairoli.
Our first compatriot was Clement Desalle, who came in fourth ahead of Jeremy Van Horebeek. Ken De Dijcker, who made a pit stop for new glasses, still finished seventh and we got Kevin Strijbos in ninth place. Joel Roelants finished thirteenth just ahead of home driver Marc De Reuver.
