Russian Tonkov wins Qualifying MX2 in Italy.
The Russian Alexander Tonkov took the gang in tow after the start of the Qualifying race for the MX2. Tonkov was immediately followed by world champion Herlings. Butron, Ferris, Febvre and Lupino followed. Tonkov was certainly not impressed by the violence behind his back and was not deterred. Romain Febvre was the first to struggle to keep up with the pace of the front runners and had to loosen the role somewhat. Home rider Alessandro Lupino took advantage of this and moved up to fifth place. In the meantime, we had also received a notice from our northern neighbor Glenn Coldenhoff, who disappeared from the race after four rounds. Tonkov found it difficult at the front and Herlings started to put some pressure on him. Starting on the very last lap, Herlings launched a first attack at the end of the starting area, but the Russian immediately blocked the attack. At the next slope, Herlings goes around the outside of the bend and jumps past Tonkov in the subsequent steep descent. Jeffey Herlings is in the lead until he makes a mistake on the next descent. Tonkov regains the lead, but Ferris and Butron also pass Herlings. Dean Ferris, now in second place, starts attacking Tonkov's position. But the Russian keeps a cool head and wins his very first Qualifying race in the MX2 class. Dean Ferris takes second place ahead of José Butron, Jeffery Herlings and Jordi Tixier.
Our compatriots Brent Van Doninck and Kevin Fors finished 18th and 23rd
