The KTM dominance
Never before has the dominance of the orange army been as clear as this weekend. In the MX2, the KTM factory team took the first two places. They are also first and second in the individual rankings. In addition, the stage was completely orange, thanks to the input of José Butron. They have not yet lost a single series in the constructors' championship... well, quite straight forward when you know that Jeffrey Herlings rides a KTM. To make it even more impressive, in the MX2 class no other brand than KTM has taken the lead... WOW!
In the MX1 it is also KTM that counts. Once again it was a 1-2 for the KTM factory team. Cairoli and De Dycker are also first and second in the World Cup standings after this weekend. In the constructors' championship, KTM has only lost one series. The first of the season. That was for Suzuki, driven by our Belgian Clement Desalle.
If you look across the lake you will see that KTM is gradually conquering America like they did with the World Cup. Marvin Musquin won the 250cc East this weekend and with one race to go he is only 5 points behind. Ken Roczen is 17 points ahead in the west coast competition with three games to go. In the Supercross 450cc class, Ryan Dungey has won for the second time this season. Even though Villopoto seems to be heading for the title like a maniac, he cannot afford to make any mistakes. Dungey is only 22 points behind.
In motocross, making it to the top 20 is everything, from there you can earn points. I will therefore take the top 20 of the MX1 and MX2 to see which brand is most present in the Motocross World Championship. A championship that ranks number one for constructors.
This image says it all. The 250f KTM is THE bike for World Cup teams. With 52% of the points they have an absolute majority. NV-A chairman Bart de Wever dreams of such an election result every day. Fortunately for KTM, this is not fiction. But the pure reality. Their efforts over the last ten years have been fully rewarded. After this we get a fairly strong Yamaha. The best Japanese brand is doing well with pilots such as Charlier, Ferris and Pocock. Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda dangle at the back. You could say this is due to the lack of satellite teams like KTM has. But the best Suzuki is in 7th place, the best Kawasaki is in 11th place and the best Honda is in 16th place.e place. With results like that, I wouldn't dare show up in Japan again. However, Honda and Kawasaki manage to hold their own very well across the pond. Even more impressive, they are there what KTM is here. Geico Honda and Pro Circuit Kawasaki have been the benchmark in the 250cc class for years. Suzuki, however, has work to do.
No absolute majority for the Austrian party in this chamber. Still, having double the number of points than your biggest competitor is not bad at all. Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda are also not doing badly. It is actually striking how well Suzuki is doing with the larger engine. They are also doing well in America, Millsaps has been in the lead of the Supercross championship for a long time and now he is still a good third. And that actually without a factory machine. The Yamaha 450cc engine performs less than its little brother. No idea if this has anything to do with it, but this is the only motorcycle where the engine block is incorporated backwards into the frame. In the MX1 we find a second European brand, TM. By their standards they are certainly not doing too badly. Shaun Simpson is 14e in the championship and time and time again he takes points.
