Ivan Van Den Broeck breaks oath!
“When I stopped I decided for myself that I would never ride a motorcycle again.” That was the oath that Ivan Van Den Broeck took upon himself at the end of a great career. Van Den Broeck, who started most with number 7, became Belgian BMB champion three times. With two titles at the Inters.
Two-time Belgian champion wants to have fun
How good are you then? Well, stoneware, because those titles came in the period of Dédé Malherbe, Harry Everts, the late Georges Jobé and “Gastounet” Rahier, Dré Vromans and associates. That was the absolute top, just count the world titles. With his teammates/rivals, Ivan achieved two victories in the Motocross of Nations. At the age of 58, Ivan is the manager of a thriving roofing company. Apart from a sidestep to KTM, Ivan actually remained a true Maico adept.
“I continued to follow the cross world. Although I only visited a few crosses. I never skipped De Keiheuvel and Kester. Six years ago I got a new knee. That worked out very well and I currently feel very fit. I occasionally went to one of those old-timer crosses. I know a lot of people there, but I especially tasted the good atmosphere on and around the circuit. With the oldtimers it is not a matter of cutting each other off. They are gentlemen. I also saw that the slopes are often in very good condition. One thing leads to another. Together with Eddy Nuyts and a few others, I will start next year in the Transverhaegen team, led by former rider Walter Verhaegen. But let me make this clear: I do it purely for fun. Enjoy two sets of riding, and then try to talk to each other under the table in the tent. I'm not even interested in the results.”
The affable Van Den Broeck is welcome in the club. He will be driving a Maico 1977. For the hardcore fans: that is the last year that a trapezoidal fuel tank was used.
