Very strong MX1 debut for Getteman in Mantova
Jens Getteman was clearly in his element during the Mantova Starcross, the traditional opener of the international motocross season. In a strong field of participants, the 19-year-old Denderleeuwen native rode to a nice 1th place on his MX8 debut! Getteman made a positive impression with three regular matches and his typical, flowing style. Compatriot Kevin Strijbos won the three series in Italy.
Although the reigning Belgian MX2 champion recorded good times on Saturday morning, it took a while before he got the right rhythm in the qualifying race. Ultimately, Jens crossed the finish line in 13th behind the Englishman Jason Dougan. After all the nervousness for his first MX1 performance had disappeared, the large audience on Sunday saw a carefree Getteman at work. Despite a poor start in the first race, the Topsport Vlaanderen rider immediately rolled up his sleeves. He managed to make up a lot of ground in the first two laps. Jens equaled the lap times of the faster men in front of him and steered his CRF450R to an impressive eighth place.
The Honda number 51 was not deterred in the second moto by starting in the middle of the field. Getteman came back strong from 23rd to fight his way to a place in the top ten. He would finish ninth behind Honda factory rider Max Nagl. Once again, a difficult start played tricks on Jens in the third heat, but two mistakes in particular did him in. Nevertheless, he managed to equal his best result of the day in the closing stages. With three solid races, the young LS Honda underlined its potential in the queen class.
Jens Getteman, LS Honda Racing: “All in all I am satisfied with my Starcross today. In terms of results, it actually went a lot better than we had previously estimated. Things were a bit rough on Saturday afternoon. Maybe because I hadn't competed for so long; my position on the bike was wrong and it wasn't until the end of the qualifying race that things started to go the way I wanted.
On Sunday I felt really good on the bike again! However, you had to be careful on the track because the track was quite heavy and in some places there were still spots of ice under the soft top layer. Physically, the Mantova Starcross was also not to be underestimated. The three series followed each other very quickly. As soon as you got back to the paddock - freshened up and changed - you had to leave again. So there wasn't much time to rest! Then it was good to see where I am now in Mantova. We know there is still a lot of work to be done. Especially regarding my starts, although that was not illogical because I had not yet specifically practiced my starts.”
