Pierer AG acquires Husqvarna!!!
KTM CEO Stefan Pierer is always good for a stunt. So it is not KTM itself but its personal company Pierer Industrie AG that buys Husqvarna from BMW. The Germans paid around 93 million euros in 2007, when it acquired Husqvarna from MV Agusta. Nothing has been announced about the sales price. As always, the takeover still must be approved by the competition authorities.
For KTM, a brother or sister company is interesting to increase scale. This year, with 107.142 motorcycles sold, the Austrians were for the first time larger than BMW, which clocked the counter at 104.286 two-wheelers. Whether the Husqvarna factory will also remain in Varese (Lombardy) seems very doubtful. Pierer would like to transfer production, or parts thereof, to Austria. After the less than successful BMW G450X and now the sale of Husqvarna, the Germans seem to have almost completely let go of off-road (for the time being). Yet BMW was particularly successful in enduro through Husqvarna; Antoine Meo and Juha Salminen put Huskie back on the map with E1 and E2 world titles. In their press release, BMW says that they are fully committed to “urban mobility”, scooters and electric vehicles as new challenges.
