The volunteer
Just over a week ago it was “International Volunteer Day”. So it was the "holiday" of those people who always work in silence and especially in the shade for their event, association or sport. Because of that (holiday) day I asked myself what the situation was with the volunteers in motocross, a sport that, in both Belgium and the Netherlands, relies largely on volunteers. Do we actually care enough for our volunteers and do we actually have enough respect for those people?
We can certainly discuss that last question, there could be a little more respect for the people who continue to work selflessly for our sport. With the chance that I will now sound like a preaching pastor, this has to be taken seriously.
It costs no money to respect the yellow flag and thus give the flagman the feeling that he is not doing his job for nothing. In addition, the man with the flag often protects the fallen pilot, at the risk of his own life because some pilots, young and old, imagine themselves as Villopoto and Barcia in a duel for a “Monster Million”.
In addition to this, we can also give a pat on the back to the people of the training courses in both our country and the Netherlands. In many cases we see people preparing the course before and after work and therefore in their free time. These people always try to offer us the best possible conditions. In sun, rain, frost and other weather conditions, they always try to make the best of it and they certainly deserve a pat on the back for that!
But sometimes it seems as if the volunteer is becoming an extinct species. With all due respect we must conclude that many volunteers are slowly developing a gray or even white appearance in their hair and others have already lost their hair. On the other hand, we do not yet see many young ladies and guys emerging, what if the rejuvenation does not happen, what will happen next?
We'll just have to wait a little longer and take good care of the people who are there!
