European Championship 150cc 4-stroke in 2013
Next year there will be a fun side series in the GP weekend. In addition to the European Championship 125cc 2-stroke and the European Championship MX2, there will now also be one European Championship 150cc 4-stroke class at. This class is one for the youth. Young riders can go there from the age of 11 to the age of 14. In 2013 there will be 6 competitions. Including the GP Bastogne and five other races that fall on the same weekend as the MX1 and MX2 World Championships.
To participate in this championship you have to pay a total of around 12 euros. This seems like a lot, but you do get a motorcycle for it, which you can keep afterwards. Tires, maintenance, fuel, guidance during the races and training schedules are also included in this price. On top of all this, the winner of this championship will be allowed to participate once in the following year European Championship MX2 Honda team. All this is of course very good news for the youth. They get the opportunity to drive on the most beautiful circuits in the world and show their skills in front of a large audience. The big teams are always around and can look forward to who they will recruit in the future.
But if you are Belgian, what then? In many countries, the CR150Rs have been banned from the youth series. Only purebred 85cc 2-stroke engines were still welcome. This also seems to be the case in Belgium. The BMB's 'sports regulations 2012 motocross' state the following. “07. Engine capacity per youth category: only 85cc…
… cylinder capacity allowed: 85cc, more than 50cc up to 85cc (2-stroke only)…”
This seems clear to me. Until I opened the 'motocross technical regulations'. “All motorcycles must meet the safety standards below, unless otherwise stated in the regulations of their class…
… Youth 85cc: 2-stroke: 65cc to 85cc 4-stroke: 85cc to 150cc…”
Pretty confusing if you ask me. That's why we took some advice from the organization itself.
MXM: The 2012 motocross sports regulations state that the Youth category may only ride with 85cc 2-strokes. But the technical regulations state that 150cc 4-strokes are also allowed. Which motorcycles are youth allowed to ride?
“Initially I would tell you that the technical regulations are used and that in the past it has been overlooked that the cylinder capacities are also included in the sporting regulations, which means that they have forgotten to adjust them.” Said Patrick Roels of the bmb. This means that you can participate without any problems with a 150cc 4-stroke in the youth category. Mr. also knew. Roels would like to add the following. “We will have another meeting of the MX working group this evening and I will put this right.” The confusion is immediately put to rest.
MXM: In 2013 there is a brand new championship. A European 150cc 4-stroke championship. How will the bmb respond to this?
“This class is included in the timing of every MX race counting for the BC, I don't think we can do more at our level.” Patrick Roels also told us that the 150cc 4-stroke is accessible to motocross riders from 12 to 14 years old.
Finally, there is also good news for the Dutch. The KNMV has decided that the 150cc 4-stroke engines will have their own Dutch championship. If there is not enough interest for a separate series, these 150cc's run together with the 85cc's large wheels. With a separate classification. Everyone between the ages of 11 and 15 is welcome in this class.
