Cairoli dominates Lierop in MX1
Antonio Cairoli completed the KTM success in Lierop with a double moto victory. His 53rd GP victory of his career and his 5th GP victory in a row. With this he took another step closer to his sixth world title. Ken De Dycker (2-3) rode to his fourth podium place of the season, a hard-fighting Tanel Leok (4-3) deservedly took his first podium of the season. For Clément Desalle (6-7) it was a GP to quickly forget, the number two in the standings was too bothered by his painful hand to play a significant role.
Max Nagl not only took the holeshot in the first moto. For a moment it also seemed like a surprise was in the making. Initially, Paulin also made a positive impression as second after the German. Top favorite Cairoli built up his race well, he just started in the top 10. Then Tony got on a roll to take over second place from Paulin on the fourth lap. De Dycker also rose behind Cairoli after a poor start. As expected, Nagl was also no match for Cairoli. While the tough sand track increasingly took its toll, things went more and more smoothly for Antonio. Pourcel gave up because he was experiencing too much pain from his injured shoulder blade. Although Strijbos came back from last place to 9th, 'The Kid' was anything but satisfied. Tanel Leok was the best Suzuki rider, the Estonian finished fourth. The injured Desalle had to settle for 6th place. De Reuver also fell short of expectations with an 11th place.
Repeat for Cairoli
Sensation in the first lap when Nagl lost the front and crashed on the wave section. To make matters worse, the German was then hit by Rui Goncalves. Fortunately without too many physical consequences. Max tried to continue, but unfortunately the damage to the engine turned out to be too great. Cairoli took the lead from the first lap and he would not relinquish that place! Only in the second lap did the Red Bull-KTM driver make a slip, losing six seconds to Ken De Dycker. In the final phase, Keeno tried to mount an attack on the leader but his teammate did not budge. From 6th place at the start, Leok persevered. The duel with Bobryshev in particular was animated, but the Estonian managed to fight past Simpson, Desalle and Bobryshev.
Christophe Pourcel did not start again in the second series. De Dycker did an excellent job in the World Cup standings. Keeno is closing in on 6 points, but even 3rd place is certainly not out of reach. Gautier Paulin (5-9) saw his lead over the Belgian shrink to 22 points. After a fairly unremarkable race, Strijbos finished 6th. As far too often this season, Marc De Reuver had to deal with mechanical problems.
