Josh Coppins takes the Australian title
Josh Coppins (CDR Yamaha) ends his motocross career with a bang! The Lizzard A second place in Coolum, Queensland this weekend during the tenth and final round of the championship was enough to take the title.
The 35-year-old New Zealander had to retire in his last professional year (check out the interview we did with him earlier this year) go deep. Still, Coppins turned it into a very strong season with seven series victories and 21 top three finishes in 30 heats. It was also the fifth consecutive championship for the Australian Craig Dack Racing team.
“This means a lot to me,” said the New Zealander, who spent three seasons as a factory rider for Yamaha racer in the FIM MX1 World Championship -GP World Championship. “Winning a National Championship is never easy, especially when it's not in your own country! The level of the teams impressed me. I had a good time and I'm really happy that I rode here before my sporting retirement.”
“It felt good to be able to give something back to Yamaha and all my sponsors,” he added. “I feel at home with Yamaha and I have now won races for them all over the world. The latest YZ450F is one of my favorite bikes of my entire professional career. “
Coppins will soon represent his country in Lommel during the 66th Motocross of Nations on September 30. The Kiwi has been a permanent fixture since his first MXoN selection in 1993. Josh will probably continue to work with Yamaha in the future and he will also remain active in MX.
