Brenda Wagemans on her way to the Ladies Cup!
It was V-day again on Sunday for VLM. That's four weeks in a row. The women – or rather girls – can then compete against each other in the Ladies Cup. In Linde-Peer the competition with 24 participants was already well received and on the Keiheuvel on Sunday it was no different. Brenda Wagemans in particular was delighted. She won both series and is now at the top of the rankings.
“Winning in front of your own people also tastes like a bonus,” laughed Brenda. “But it is not here that I want to prove myself, but in the IMBA, the European championship.”Brenda Wagemans was in the lead from start to finish in both series. The only threat came from Nikki Scott, a New Zealander who competes for Van De Laar Racing this season and found accommodation in Balen with VLM chairman Cleemput. The match at the Keiheuvel was actually more of a home match for Nikki than for the winner. Unfortunately, Scott fell - while chasing her neighbor.
Of course, that didn't bother Brenda Wagemans. Although the 'Ladies Cup' is not exactly her main goal. Nor is the World Championship, in which she competed last year and twice finished twelfth. “The World Cup is way too expensive,” says Brenda. “I do get support from Team Defraine, but the money to make long journeys and get everything in order is skyrocketing. Moreover, I am studying to become a teacher. My second year. Occasional internships – such as at the beginning of this week – are difficult to combine with motocross. So I will be happy if I can finish the European Championships and Belgian Championships. And it is a bonus that you can prepare yourself at VLM or VMC in between.”
Brenda Wagemans is one of the most striking Belgian talents. Not yet 20 (next Sunday she hopes to celebrate her birthday in Wommelgem with another victory) but she was introduced to motocross at an early age. “My brother Dennis is a motocross racer and I have been traveling with him since I was ten,” she says. “Normally for me the best is yet to come. But first I have to graduate, check my wallet to see if there is enough money to do motocross, and then maybe go back to the world championships. However, at the moment that remains a dream.”
