Mika Ahola passed away
Mika Ahola died last night in a hospital in Barcelona. The five-time Enduro World Champion was hospitalized last month after a crash while testing the Jotagas two-stroke enduro motorcycle which he would drive in the E2 World Championship. In that crash, 37-year-old Ahola suffered several internal injuries.
On Sunday evening, Ahola had a kidney removed in emergency surgery. It was as a result of complications from that operation that Ahola died. Ahola had already announced this two weeks ago to draw a line under his action career.
Ahola became Enduro World Champion a total of five times. In 2007 he won the world title in the E2 class. E2008 titles followed in 2009 and 1. In 2010, Ahola returned to the queen class (E2) to become world champion again. In October of last year he won his fifth consecutive world title in E3. This made Ahola not only the oldest Enduro World Champion ever, but also the first rider to win the world title in all three classes. The Finn won his five world titles on an HM Honda of the Italian Zanardo team.
Above all, Ahola was also one of the crowd favorites of the EWC. Always accompanied by his wife Marika, he was close to the fans.
