Revival for Belgian supermoto?
In recent years, the Supermoto discipline in our country has been in a downward spiral. On the other hand, there was certainly no lack of interest from the pilots for the Belgian Championship. The high organizational costs, but especially the lack of spectacular and safe circuits, usually in business and industrial zones, caused many organizers to drop out. Fortunately, hard work is being done behind the scenes to relaunch the supermoto.
Leslie Beys, member of the Supermoto working group in the BMB, is more than aware of the situation. Yet he also sees positive developments. “2012 must be the year of a restart to save this spectacular branch of motorsport from destruction. Thanks to the collaboration between BMB and KNMV, the pilots can participate in 2012 competitions in Belgium and the Netherlands in 10. During 5 races in the Netherlands, the pilots compete for the 'Belgian Supermoto Cup'. Only pilots with a Belgian annual permit are allowed to participate. In addition, the Belgian Championship over 4 matches in Belgium remains. Except for the Prestige pilots, all others drive in one category. According to a pyramid system with quarter-finals - repechages - semi-finals and a final, the national pilots compete for the title of Belgian Champion. Also new is the Super Final between the best National & Prestige pilots, in which points for the Belgian Championship can also be earned. Traditionally, the 'Superbiker' ends the season in Mettet. Although the collaboration with the KNMV means there are more riding opportunities, we nevertheless hope that a few more organizers will sign up.”
