Five minutes with Nick Kouwenberg
If there is supercross racing somewhere, Nick Kouwenberg (20) is happy to be there. Especially if it is still possible in your own country! The young rider from Elshout was of course also present during the Indoor Motorcross in Venray. We went to visit Nick in the paddock and also asked about his plans for 2012, as according to insiders Kouwenberg would ride for the Van Beers Racing team at TM in the MX2 World Championship.
How do you look back on the weekend?
Nick Kouwenberg: “Positive sides, negative sides… I made a lot of mistakes, but I also learned a lot. It was certainly a beautiful weekend, the organization and Monster had everything neatly arranged. The necessary attention was paid to both the drivers and the public. In addition to the competitions, there was plenty to do with the motorcycle fair and the fair. As the weekend progressed the driving also got better. In the beginning I was quite stressed and had a hard time finding the right rhythm. After a few hard hits on the concrete and that incident with Mike Kras, during the one-one I was a bit more careful. But the fall with Mike ended in a sporting manner and some sensation is always nice for the audience. That means at least we're going for it!”
The speed was there, but you sometimes lacked a bit of accuracy?
Kouwenberg: “That's true and you pay cash for every mistake! On Sunday afternoon I fell on a straw bale and hit my head on the concrete. I was dizzy for a moment, luckily I was able to resume after an hour. In the last chance I came second, in the semi-final I was fourth. In the final I was stuck in the second corner, I took a break and from last place I came up to 12th. It was also one of my best motos in terms of riding. Nice to end the weekend like this.”
Are you also going to work in Germany?
Kouwenberg: “I still have to ride in Munich and Dortmund, then the SX season is over. Because I have other obligations, I will not be going to America next year. The original intention was to drive an SX there.”
Will we see you next year on a blue motorcycle?
Kouwenberg: “(laughing) I really can't say anything about it, sorry! Normally everything will be completed next week and you will hear about it then. In any case, I am very happy with it, I will never get such an opportunity again.”
