Zecchina takes 125 European Championship title, Graulus misses podium by a hair
Despite his broken finger, Simone Zecchina kept a cool head and the Italian won the European 125cc title in front of his own audience. Samuele Bernardini, his closest pursuer for Fermo, did everything he could but had to give up twice. A very strong Tim Gajser won twice, he took the final victory of the Italian GP and ultimately took second place in the championship ahead of Swiss Jeremy Seewer. Damon Graulus ends his European Championship campaign in 5th. In the daily standings, the Standing Construct pilot finished third on equal points with Zecchina, but the Italian drove a better second race.
During the first race on Saturday evening, Samuele Bernardini took the holeshot ahead of Damon Graulus. Damon immediately lost a few places in the next corners. While Bernardini was in the lead, Graulus started an advance, first taking back Seewer then Moroni and Zechina. After strong resistance from leader Bernardini, Damon took command half course. However, the unleashed Tim Gajser had the longest breath, he connected with Graulus and struck two minutes before the end. After a mediocre start, Brent Van Doninck had climbed to 4th place. Versluis (7th) and Plessers (8th) also made it into the top 10.
This morning the holeshot went to champion Zechhina, but Gajser wasted no time and grabbed the lead never to let go. Bernardini tried to get back, but lost his glasses and gave up four laps before the end. Seewer came second, 10 seconds behind Gajser. The catch-up race of the day was done by Brent Van Doninck. From just inside the top 20, the Herentals native stormed to an impressive 5th place. This would put Brent fifth in the daily rankings. In the final championship standings, Stefan Everts' protégé finished 5th, Dave Versuis finished 10th, Matthias Plessers 13th.
