ISDE 2011: Finland dominates opening day
De Finns were already put forward in advance as favorites for the IS THE in their own country. And on the opening day the Finns managed to live up to the high expectations.
The riders mainly had to deal with gravel paths on the opening day. The rain that fell during the night made everything a lot more difficult. This certainly turned out to make the rocks extremely slippery.
Eero Remes (in the intro photo) turned out to be the fastest rider on day 1. The KTM pilot won the E1 classification ahead of his Finnish teammates Juha Salminen en Matti Seistola. It is therefore not surprising that the Finnish team has been leading the World Trophy rankings from the start. The Spaniards also proved to be surprisingly strong in the Finnish sand. On leader Ivan Cervantes after that the six all finished in the same minute. Places three and four were reserved for Australia and the United States.
The Dutch also showed quite strong with an 8e place in the daily rankings. World Championship rider Hans Vogels was the best performer for the Orange shirts.
Bad start for Belgians
Was with the Belgians Jean-Francois Goblet the strongman today. Together with Adrien Vandommele en Wim Vanderheyden he was the only Belgian to stay under an hour today. ISDE rookies Bob Van Looveren en Jerome Martiny immediately had to give up a lot of time. Worse perhaps was the fact that Martiny was caught at a speed check by the Politi (that's the name of the police in Finland) and had to give up his driver's license. There is a good chance that Team Belgium will be reduced to 5 men tomorrow. You can read a report of Wim Vanderheyden's first day here.
