Belgian Motocross GP in 2012 to Wallonia
The Belgian round of the Motocross World Championship will almost certainly take place on Walloon soil in 2012. The only question now is where exactly in Wallonia?
In September 2012 will it Urban motocross center of lommel be the stage for the world's most prestigious motocross competition: the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. However, the preparations for this mass event mean that the Belgian round of the Motocross World Championship will not take place in Lommel next year.
After being organized in Flanders for 4 years, the Belgian GP will therefore take place on Walloon soil for the first time in 2012. Not one but two possible organizers have already submitted their candidacy.
De Motocross Club des Hauts-Pays, which in recent years has been the Coupe de l'Avenir wants to get the Belgian GP to the west of Hainaut. The club's chairman Olivier Rougraff would join forces with the organizers of the Dour Festival. The GP would then not be organized in Angreau - where the Coupe de l'Avenir now takes place - but in Dour. The slag heaps of the old coal mine already offer possibilities.
A strong candidacy, especially because the organizers of the Dour festival also have many sponsor contacts. However, some things would also depend on the support of institutional partners (including local and regional authorities). But it is an open secret that Elio Di Rupo, the strong man in the region, has long wanted to bring a major motorsport event to his region. Moreover, “l'enfant du pays”, Clément Desalle, could also play a role as a crowd puller. Although Desalle is not exactly over-mediatized in Wallonia.
If we can believe the rumor mill, there are also GP plans with the Shanks-sand quarry Mont Saint Guibert, which has been the annual setting for the final of the Motocross Championships since 2008. A location that certainly has potential and has proven it. The problem, however, is that the sand quarry is still being mined and that the time to build a GP circuit there will therefore be relatively short. Mont Saint Guibert however, has a strong trump card in terms of accessibility. It is about 20 minutes away Brussels and 35 minutes from the airport Zaventem.
The coming weeks and months will provide a definitive answer as to which candidate will be selected to organize the Belgian Motorcross GP in 2012.
