GP France: Steven Frossard wins in MX1!
What did not work out in Bulgaria, Steven Frossard (Monster Energy-Yamaha) did accomplish in front of his own audience. In St-Jean d'Angely, France, 'de Fros' won the fifth GP of the season ahead of Tony Cairoli (Red Bull-KTM) and Clément Desalle (Rockstar-Suzuki). After the French GP it will be even more exciting at the top of the World Cup; Desalle is still leading, but with Cairoli, Frossard and Nagl there are three chasers within a maximum of 20 points of the MX-Panda.
The Fros is loose!
The well-organized Saint-Jean d'Angély had actually cloned itself after yesterday's heavy rain showers, because the conditions with deep, drying ruts were very similar to those of last year! After the holeshot in the first moto, Frossard, recovering from a thumb injury, managed to withstand the pressure from David Philippaerts and Tony Cairoli. It was a long catch-up race for Desalle after a crash in the second corner. From last place, Clément fought his way to 11thde place, less than expected, but good for 10 important World Cup points. Ken De Dycker had a mediocre start, but he still managed to finish fifth. Townley performed well in the sub-top and finished 8thth, just ahead of Kevin Strijbos.
Desalle takes revenge
In the second moto Desalle did everything he could to take the lead quickly and that strategy paid off. The Suzuki star dominated and took his fourth series victory of the season. Frossard deservedly finished second after starting sixth. Despite alleged knee problems, Cairoli finished third ahead of the fast Honda duo Goncalves-Bobryshev. Kevin Strijbos confirmed his reputation as a fast starter, unfortunately 'the Kid' was unable to make sufficient use of that good starting position. Strijbos eventually turned 11de. Once again De Dycker had to come back from far away, but with an 8th place did not disappoint the LS Honda pilot. The second heat was also one to forget for Steve Ramon, he finished 17de. Ben Townley, who performed well in his team's home GP (CLS-Kwasaki), crashed in the final phase together with Max Nagl.
