James Stewart dominates in Phoenix
A huge crowd filled Chase Field stadium in Phoenix last night for the second race of the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross. After finishing third at the season opener a week ago, San Manuel / Red Bull Yamaha's James Stewart has taken his first victory. Josh Hansen, took his second win in as many races at the Lites West.
Stewart immediately took the holeshot in the final, followed by GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham and Rockstar-Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey. Despite Ryan Villopoto's insistence, Stewart held on and remained in the lead from start to finish. On the 9th lap Villopoto was almost in Stewart's wheel, he fell but was still able to come back to second place. Supercross rookie Trey Canard finished third and is now third in the standings.
Hansen again in the Lites, Roczen hurt
In the Supercross Lites class, Mitch Payton's Monster Energy / Pro Circuit Kawasaki team was back to partying. Broc Tickle rode to the holeshot ahead of Rockstar Energy Suzuki's Ryan Morais and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Josh Hansen. Tickle led for seven laps, but made a costly mistake when he briefly lost control of his bike in a corner. Hansen, who had meanwhile moved up to second place, took advantage and never looked back. Tickle started third again, but fought back to score his second consecutive second-place finish after Anaheim 1. Morais completed the podium in third.
Ken Roczen did not have a great evening, he crashed in the heat series, injured his ankle, but still managed to get into the final by winning the repechage. The Red Bull-KTM rider started strongly in fourth but eventually gave up. Tyla Rattray, who won his qualifying heat, finished sixth.
