Windham and Moss win in Australian Super-X
It was America on top yesterday in the second round of the Monster Energy Super-X Championship in Canberra. Kevin Windham took the win ahead of Josh Hansen and Justin Brayton. Hansen is now in the lead in the standings.
Due to the rain in the afternoon, the track was heavy and extremely difficult. Who knows why, but for the second round of the championship the Australians switched to a 'Triple Challenge' race format, three short final sprints of 7 laps, both in the open class and in the lites!
CDR Rockstar Yamaha's Jay Marmont took the first holeshot, but Josh Hansen already passed him on the first straight. Hansen was soon joined by Justin Brayton and Kevin Windham. On the third lap, Windham passed Brayton and made up ground on Hansen. After a fierce battle in the fifth round, Windham won. Hansen continued to hang on and finished second. Brayton got the second holeshot, but Windham quickly took the lead and would not relinquish it. Brayton made a mistake on the whoops on the fifth lap, leaving Hansen and Marmont in second and third place, respectively. Brayton was now fourth.
After Windham took the holeshot in the last moto, the matter was immediately settled. K-Dub easily drove to a three out of three! Hansen and Mike Alessi were second and third, but Brayton and Marmont passed Alessi on the fourth lap. Windham became the overall victor, Hansen (second) and the third Brayton made it an all-American podium. Jay Marmont finished fourth, after his disappointing start in Newcastle, Alessi now finished fifth. Josh Hansen now leads the championship, followed by Brayton and Marmont.
Kevin Windham (USA)
“What a great start to my Australian campaign. I really enjoy the country and the people and I had a great time here tonight. The different formats certainly make it interesting, because anything can happen! I'm just happy that I rode well and consistently and got the win in all three races.”
Josh Hansen (USA)
“I'm just really happy to be racing here and getting these good results. It was real close racing tonight and I think the audience got to see some fun fights. It is good to lead the championship and I would like to maintain that for the rest of the championship. I really enjoy it here!”
Justin Brayton (USA)
“It's good for the championship and for us (Americans) that we can come here. This gives Supercross more prestige in Australia. The different formats each week keep things interesting and the racing is always very intense. It's my last round next week and it would be great to end the day with a win. “
Lites: Who Stops Jake Moss?
Defending Lites champion, Rockstar Motul Suzuki's Matt Moss took the holeshot in the first of the three six Lites finals and cruised to a dominant victory. PJ Larsen and Ryan Marmont (both JDR Motorex KTM) finished second and third respectively.
Moss got another good start in the second final. For 7 laps he successfully held off PJ Larsen. Britain's Steven Clarke finished third. In the third and final moto, Moss again took the holeshot and also remained in the lead, driving to a three out of three, just like Windham. Larsen crashed in the difficult sand section and had to retire. Second place therefore went to Clarke and Serco Yamaha's Ford Dale. Moss logically won the final standings with Clarke second and Ryan Marmont third.
The Australian Super X now heads to Launceston for the third round at Aurora Stadium next weekend.
