The Netherlands top favorite for 85cc Coupe de l'Avenir
In addition to the Coupe de l'Avenir, the 5 will be held in Angreau this weekende edition of the 85cc Coupe on the programme. This is also a country competition, but for even younger, up-and-coming talent. If the quantity is not comparable to that of the Coupe, then the quality is certainly there. The battle for the podium already promises to be fierce. In addition to three teams that play a favorite role, there are a number of outsiders. The key question, however, is which three teams will take their place on the final podium.
Anyone who looks at the list of participants in the 85cc Cup can safely conclude that both France and the Netherlands take this Cup very seriously. The selections of both Olivier Robert (FFM) and Leon Giesbers are perhaps the best possible. The French team is led by Nicolas Dercourt, the newly crowned French champion with the Cadets. His teammates Germain Jamet and Dan Houzet both finished in the top 6 of the same championship. Our northern neighbors chose Brian Bo
gers and Micha-Boy De Waal obvious. Both became European champions and vice-European champions 85cc respectively. Luca Nijenhuis, the overall victor in the ADAC MX Junior Cup, completes the Dutch team.
The third favorite is the Belgian team led by Robert Gielis. Both Brent Vandoninck, Daymond Martens and Yannick Heylen were mainly active in France and Germany last season. Vandoninck even beat the French a number of times in their own Cadet championship, but due to the chauvinistic policy of the FFM he was not classified in the championship. However, that turned out to be the case in the ADAC MX Junior Cup where Vandoninck finished second. Daymond Martens turned 8e in the same Junior Cup.
We can count Great Britain among the outsiders this year. With Connor Clark, Michael Eccles and Liam Knight, the British team mainly consists of sub-top players. The British may lack international experience, but they still know the ropes. In addition to the official ACU British Youth Motocross Championship, these kids also compete in the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup of the MC Federation.
The FMWB team could also end up in the top 5. With Arthur Dumon and Erik Willems it has two top riders from the BK 85cc. But it is mainly Ludovic Brevers that we expect a lot from. The Kawasaki rider combined the Espoirs class of the AMPL with the European Championship 85cc this season. During the last race of that European Championship, Brevers was able to finish in the top 10. The Walloon team is managed by Patrick Caps.
It is not entirely clear to us how we should assess the other teams. The Swedes also come with a strong team, including the current Swedish champion and vice-champion. But to what extent can these young Vikings hold their own at an international level?
In addition to the Belgian (BMB) and the Walloon (FMWB) team, a very young Flemish (VMBB) team will also be at the start with Yannick Vertommen, Jens Carlier and Jordi Van Mieghem as drivers. No potential podium candidates, but perhaps boys for the coming years. In any case, they can gain the necessary experience this weekend.
The young wolves of the 85cc Cup will be in action twice on Sunday: at 13:25 PM and 16:05 PM.
