Philippaerts beats Cairoli in qualifying thriller!
Only 24 riders started in the MX1 qualifying series, but that did not spoil the fun in terms of spectacle. David Philippaerts repeated his qualifying stunt from the Italian GP to the delight of the Brazilian fans. Despite heavy pressure from Cairoli! At the finish the difference was less than three-tenths of a second. Philippaerts led from start to finish but was soon followed by 'the whipmaster'. As had previously appeared in the MX2 race, the heat and a lot of dust again created difficult conditions. Desalle sent his Soes to third place ahead of the returning Xavier Boog. Steve Ramon finished seventh after an unremarkable race.
Season revelation Bobryshev crashed hard during the pre-qualifying session and did not start during the qualifying series. According to the first information, the sympathetic Russian would have broken his ribs. Leok also had a hard crash earlier in the day, but the LS Motors-Honda rider recovered with a fifth place in the qualifying race. The Costa Rican Roberto Castro (champion of South America) was the fastest local with twelfth place.
