MX2 Bellpuig: Roelants second after Musquin!
There was no shortage of surprising twists in Catalunya. After a difficult first round, world champion Musquin (6+1) still won. With five minutes on the clock, Ken Roczen had to retire in the second heat due to technical problems. Bad luck again, just like in the second Portuguese series last week. A driven Joël Roelants (5+2) took second place, his first podium of the season. Shaun Simpson completed the KTM podium. After a third place in series, Jeffrey Herlings scored no points in the second series. Due to the disastrous GP of Herlings and Roczen, Musquin obviously did an excellent job in the standings.
Series 1: Roczen wins for Frossard
Another holeshot for Jeffrey 'The Bullet' Herlings. Dennis Verbruggen also had a great start this time, but he could not take advantage of it due to an early mistake. Herlings soon came under pressure from Steven Frossard and Ken Roczen. That produced spectacular moments because the hard track in Bellpuig was extra treacherous due to the dried tracks from the wet Saturday. An important development for the championship was the crash of Marvin Musquin, who could not move in Osborne's wheel. In the meantime, an impressive Roczen had already dealt with Frossard and Herlings. Gautier Paulin rode to a regular fourth place and Joël Roelants completed a good race, after a mediocre start, in fifth place. Van Horebeek finished eighth.
Series 2: Musquin takes advantage
The second MX2 series came to a decisive halt after just a few seconds. A massive crash at the start claimed many victims among the top riders: Frossard, Herlings and Van Horebeek. Herlings would even crash a second time, meaning he didn't score any points. Musquin, on the other hand, had a carefree race, the Frenchman was in the lead and was in the lead from the first to the last lap. Roczen, second until then, saw the GP victory slip from his hands when he had to retire due to engine trouble. Two laps earlier, Zach Osborne, who had come on strong, suffered the same fate. In the final phase, Roelants defeated the surprisingly strong Lupino.
