KTM SX-F 350: the stamp of Stefan Everts
Stefan Everts is the spiritual father of the brand new KTM SX-F 350. The development of this machine was close to the heart of the 10-time world champion. The fact that the 200 employees of the Research & Development department could make full use of Everts' experience was an invaluable asset.
It was Everts who urged KTM to replace the PDS system that was so characteristic of the brand with a rear suspension with a link system. According to KTM, this was not because the PDS system did not function, but because Stefan preferred a link system for its versatility. For example, a link system does not require major changes to ensure that a rear suspension functions efficiently. on just about all types of circuits.
Everts also worked closely with KTM engineers on the ergonomics. An important point for Stefan, who believes that a rider should feel good behind the wheel of the SX-F 350. “I have rarely seen someone who can focus so much on a goal,” says Joachim Sauer, KTM's marketing manager. “Stefan is very demanding, both for himself and for those he works with. He makes no compromises!” Sauer adds.
No concessions were made in terms of the power source either. For the development of the 350cc engine, the Austrian motorcycle specialists started from a blank sheet. So there is no question of a rebored 250 or a reduced 450. No, the block was developed from A to Z with the new cylinder capacity in mind. And that of course makes a world of difference. The ultra-compact block has almost the same dimensions as that of the SX-F 250. And at 27,4 kg, the weight of the block is barely more than the 25 kg of the MX2 engine. If you omit the 1,5 kg electric starter, the difference becomes insignificant. The SX-F 350 is therefore equipped with an electric starter. Not convinced of the usefulness of an electric starter on a dirt bike? Everts admits that he too was skeptical on this point. However, he has now completely recovered because he admits that he can no longer do without an electric starter. After all, you can gain valuable seconds after a fall with an electric starter.
But the big novelty on this 350 block is actually the electronic fuel injection. The SX-F 350 is the very first off-road KTM with fuel injection. It is hardly a surprise that Japan's Keihin supplies this injection. In the KTM Powerparts catalog you will find software (€25 VAT not included) that allows you to program three additional power curves. Two of them are softer, the third is more aggressive than the original power curve. Those with deeper pockets can purchase the setter tool with which you can download engine data and make more adjustments possible.
The frame has been rethought from A to Z to gain stiffness and stability, without sacrificing comfort. In total, 24 different designs were tested to see which best suited the new characteristics that a rear suspension with link system entails.
Although the KTM SX-F 350 is innovative in many respects, many things remain familiar. “Ready to Race” also applies now. For example, the SX-F 350 is equipped with Excel wheels (which weigh 200 grams less thanks to new spokes), a hydraulic clutch, a Renthal steering wheel, Brembo brakes, Braking brake discs, WP suspensions of the latest generation, TwinAir air filter and a plastic impregnated decoration kit.
