Cyclocross rider Sven Nys is going motocross!
A few days ago he called it “project M” on his blog, but now it can be fully known: Sven Nys is going motocross! The 33-year-old Nys has had another beautiful winter. The Landbouwkrediet-Colnago rider became Belgian cyclo-cross champion, won the GVA Trophy and took bronze at the World Championships in Tabor. Yet Nys is not going to rest on his laurels, because after a few weeks of holiday he has started preparing for his mountain bike season. He also has a new challenge: motocross or project 'M' as he has called it until now.
Sven thus realizes a childhood dream, because the ex-BMX rider once dreamed of a motocross career. However, the model professional does not do it overnight and has drawn up a specific training schedule for motocross in consultation with coach Paul Van Den Bosch. Van Den Bosch previously trained world motocross champion Georges Jobé. For the driving technical aspects, the Kannibaal van Baal can call on Marnicq Bervoets and Stefan Everts.
Sven Nys: “Stefan Everts proposed to participate in his charity race, Everts & Friends, on July 21. He probably never thought I would say yes, but then he doesn't know me well. I got my initiation on the dirt bike from Stefan himself. The feeling was immediately good, which is why I am starting this project with the necessary ambition. My goal is to make a good impression on July 21, finish the race and have fun on the bike. If that goes well, I would like to compete in the Belgian Championships. Although my priorities obviously remain cyclo-cross and the 2012 mountain bike Olympics.”
Stefan Everts: “I was shocked when Sven called me back to confirm his participation in Everts & Friends. I did not expect that! I expected much less that he would do so well on the bike. Sven is a natural talent. This also proves how complete he is as a sportsman. It is too late for him to become world champion now, but if he can get a taste of a new discipline in a cool way, why not? Michael Schumacher has also raced motorcycles for fun. And Roger De Vlaeminck and Roland Liboton rode motocross.”
Everts & Friends is a unique motocross event for charity. The fifth edition will take place on July 21 at the Horensbergdam circuit in Genk. During Everts & Friends, the stars of today, tomorrow and yesterday compete against each other in an exceptional, fun competition program. In addition, a lot of attention is paid to side entertainment with activities for children, a freestyle demonstration and a large supporters party. As with previous editions, the proceeds from the 'Everts & Friends Charity Race' will go entirely to charities selected by Stefan Everts that mainly focus on children and young people: 'A Heart for Limburg' (King Baudouin Foundation), 'Make a Wish', Ter Heide (counselling center for persons with severe or multiple intellectual disabilities) and Foundation Kriibskrank Kanner (a Luxembourgish-Belgian children's cancer fund).
Anyone who wants to see a preview of Sven's first riding experience on a motorcycle can tune in tonight/Thursday to The Red carpet, on one at 18.10.
