KTM up in Bulgaria: Nagl, Musquin and Laier
Max Nagl (1-2) won the first GP of the season today in Sevlievo, Bulgaria. Teammate Tony Cairoli (5-1) rode his much-discussed KTM SX-F 350 to a first series win in the second moto and finished second. Clément Desalle (3-5) became the best Belgian with third place. Steve Ramon (7-3) and Ken De Dycker (4-8) had to settle for fifth and sixth place.
First blow for Max!
Nagl, the 1 MX2009 vice world champion, impressed in the first moto with a start-finish victory. Philippaerts came second ahead of Clément Desalle and De Dycker. After a difficult start, Cairoli completed his catch-up race in fifth place. In the second series the Italian made a good start and won easily ahead of Max Nagl. Ramon completed a creditable comeback in third. After a weak start, De Dycker managed to limit the damage somewhat and finished eighth. Kevin Strijbos only managed to score points in the first heat, in which he finished 15th just after teammate De Reuver. De Reuver was in the top ten in the second race when he was stung by an insect. Marc had an allergic reaction and fell. To prevent worse, the sympathetic Beursfoon rider abandoned the race and went to the emergency room for treatment. Fortunately, sneezing was diagnosed seriously. For Kevin Wouts, Yentel Martens, Manuel Priem and Bas Verhoeven, Bulgaria became a GP to quickly forget.
Still, Musquin, promising debut from Herlings
The KTM dominance continued in the MX2 class. World champion Musquin won both series, while his 15-year-old challenger Ken Roczen (Suzuki) came second after two second places. Frenchman Steven Frossard (3-4) came third, although the CLS-Kawasaki pilot was never in contention for the series wins. Much more striking was the debut of 15-year-old Jeffrey Herlings. Jeffrey was always at the front and competed with the MX2 toppers for several laps without any complications. As icing on the cake, the Elsendorp thoroughbred rode to a brilliant third place in the second series.
Van Horebeek made the best impression of the Belgians, finishing sixth overall in his first Kawa GP. Shineray's Nick Triest also commented positively. Triest finished twelfth and missed the top 10 by one point. Verbruggen and Roelants expected more from Sevlievo. Although 'JR' still managed to squeeze out a very strong first race after a disastrous qualifying on Saturday. Roelants rode from 38th to 9th. The Dutch Yamaha trio Coldenhoff, Klein-Kromhof and Brakke had varying degrees of success. Klein Kromhof (17th) and Coldenhoff (19th) managed to gain points in the first heat, but things went wrong in the second heat. Coldenhoff came into contact with Ceriel on a jumping bump, Glenn broke his elbow and Klein-Kromhoff suffered a concussion. In the ensuing chaos, Roelants, among others, also fell.
The KTM dominance was also confirmed in the girls where Steffi Laier (1-1) won, ahead of the young Italian Fontanesi (2-3) and Diga-KTM rider Maria Franke (5-2). Crowd favorites Livia Lancelot and Ashley Fiolek had a disappointing GP with a fourth and fifth place respectively. Elien De Winter (10-11) rode her KTM two-stroke to ninth place overall, making her the best lowland. Marielle De Mol (13-9), Marianne Veenstra (14-10), Britt Van der Wekken (15-13) also collected quite a few points. Despite a shoulder injury sustained in Halle last weekend, Nicky Van Wordrager finished ninth in the first heat.
