Preview: BMB Seniors MX 2010
Since the class was introduced to the BMB in 2002, the Seniors have enjoyed increasing success. On the eve of the first test for it Seniors BC 2010 the class counted no less than 71 licensees. This makes it the best equipped motocross class of the BMB and perhaps of the whole of Belgium. Not everyone opts for the Seniors with steep sporting ambitions in mind. Some drivers just want to ride on circuits like Kester, Nismes or for Boulder Hill to ride. Yet there are still plenty of drivers for whom sport comes first. If one looks at the names of the current riders, the class seems to be getting stronger year after year.
The uncrowned king of the BMB Seniors is probably, Patrick Soors. Last year too, the plasterer from Beringen was a loser when it came to series and day victories. Not surprising because in recent years Soors has always been one of the favorites for the title. However, something that has not worked so far. Last year, Soors received fierce opposition from ex-GP riders, especially during the start of the season Thierry Fors to endure. In addition to Soors and Fors, there is of course the list of “Usual Suspects” such as Jacquis Bocquet, Patrick Bellon, Tom DeMul en Koen Op de Beeck. No fewer than nine different riders were able to book a series victory last year. A number that indicates the level of the field of participants.
New favorites
A name that catches the eye this year is that of Jan Blancquaert. The “evergreen” from Laarne is approaching fifty but is clearly not planning to hang up his motocross helmet just yet. For those who did not know Blanquaert, we can only describe him as the best Belgian amateur cross rider ever. But before he started that impressive career, Blancquaert first made waves at the Nationals 125cc of the BMB. So much so that in 1983 he collaborated with... Eric Geboers, Mark Velkeneers and Thierry Godfroid for Belgium the Nations Cup 125 won.
Another one also from East Flanders rookie (at least among the Seniors). Pascal Bal. Pascal also rode GPs for a few years in the late 80s and early 90s before starting a second career in the then MCB-BLB. Bal made a grand return to the BMB in 2003 the Motorgazet Cup 125 to win. Dertigiger Bal showed young wolves such as Vincent Collet and Eric Hubin. It is therefore logical that we can count both Bal and Blanquaert among the contenders for the Senior title. The question of course is whether they really have an appetite for that. The title also comes with a mandatory promotion to the Nationals MX1/MX3 or MX2. Perhaps it is time for the BMB motocross working group to realize that such a mandatory promotion does more harm than good in this case.
