Villopoto and Canard are gnawing at their deficit
Last night in sunny Anaheim, Angel Stadium was transformed into a supercross arena for the third and final time this season. 34277 fans witnessed the victories of Trey Canard in the Lites class and Ryan Villopoto in the SX class.
Villopoto took the best start in the SX final and took off straight away. He would never give up this place and thus wins his second SX of the season. Josh Hill, who is having a strong and consistent season, piloted his L&M Yamaha to second place. However, this did not go smoothly for the young Hill. As they began to pass doubled riders about halfway through, a duel for second place ensued between Hill, Windham, Dungey and Millsaps. Dungey made a mistake that allowed Millsaps to move up to fourth place, but this mistake was corrected by the leader in the standings moments later.
It's getting more and more exciting in the standings now. Dungey sees his lead disappear and is now level with Hill. With his victory, Ryan Villopoto also moves closer to the lead. He is now barely three points behind the leaders. It seems that the championship will be decided between these three drivers because the fourth in the standings Davi Millsaps already follows on 25 points.
There was immediate commotion at the lites in the initial phase when Jake Weimer crashed. Weimer resumed the race in 19th position and therefore had to chase. The fastest start was for Wil Hahn, who had Canard in his wake. Canard quickly moved into the lead and never threatened it again. Brock Tickle finished second and Wil Hahn finished third. Jake Weimer managed to recover to eighth place and thus limit the damage.
In the Lites standings, Weimer goes into the stopover with a 14-point lead over Canard. With two matches to go, everything is suddenly still possible and we can get an exciting ending here too.
Next week it will be Indianapolis' turn where the first race for the East Coast Lites championship will be held. However, this championship will start without Tyla Rattray, who reportedly broke his shoulder blade during training.
