The Tough One: suffering in Wales
The Welsh town of Oswestry will be the venue tomorrow for Britain's most extreme enduro race: The tough one.
As one might suspect, this competition lives up to its name. Only 100 riders can participate in this event. They start tomorrow morning at 9 am with a cross-country race of 1,5 hours. Only the first 50 finishers of that cross-country will advance to the actual Tough one final. The top 10 among them will be treated to a “Hot lap” in a quarry in the afternoon. In this way their starting order for the final is determined.
As an extra bonus, the six best riders from the Tough one Finale will be given a “Boulder Dash”, a sprint over boulders.
With the opt-out of Taddy Blazusiak, Dougie Lampkin's chances appear to increase significantly. Yet the former world trial champion will not be able to take a health walk in the forests of Wales. There is strong competition from the rest of the United Kingdom: Paul Edmondson, David Knight, Tom Sagar and Graham Jarvis. But contenders from the rest of the world are also coming to Wales. Biggest name among them: Mike Brown. The man from Tennessee has focused on off-road racing after his motocross career.
Belgium will also be represented in Wales. Pascal Berlingieri and Olivier Bertels will defend the colors of Enduroclub Grensland.
