Masterclass MX1 test: Honda CRF450R
The Masterclass comparison tests are the cream of the crop when it comes to complete, in-depth engine tests. In this system, one magazine per country takes part in a large international comparison test. This means that the engines are brought to one central point; placed on the same tire brand, weighed, tested on the dyno and put through their paces by the most experienced test drivers on the continent.
The complete Masterclass MX 1 test, including the motorcycle weighings and test bench data, can be found in MotorWereld 3, in stores now. MXmag.be gives you some impressions. Today it's the CRF450R's turn.
The opinion of Mattias Nilsson (Motociclismo)
Engine: “The Honda has the least toxic block in this test. However, the mono with single overhead camshaft is therefore no less potent. It is precisely his evenness that is his strength. However, it is so soft that there is little sensation to be had. As far as I'm concerned, he could be a little stronger at the top.”
Chassis: “Honda has always had one of the best frames. That is also the case in this test. The CRF is very agile and steers sharply. However, its geometry also gives it a rather nervous front end. So the steering damper is there for a reason.”
Suspension: “This is without any doubt the Honda's great asset. All in all, it has quite comfortable suspension, but nevertheless the engine is well balanced. The rear shock absorber ensures excellent traction.”
Brakes: “They are up to their task. The front brake could be a little less aggressive. You lock the front wheel quite quickly. But you get used to it…
Sitting position: “The dimensions on the CRF are very correct. You are sitting well, but not too high. That gives extra control in the corners.”
Dietmar Lacher (test rider for Motorrad Germany)
General impression: “The engine is the least impressive of the 5 engines in this test. However, it is an easy source of power and since modern 450 cc's have too much power, you can still make progress very quickly with the CRF. The frame and suspension are perfectly matched.”
Jonte Engdahl (Motorrad Sweden)
General impression: “I don't like the soft power delivery of the CRF. You really don't get a kick on the Honda. On the other hand, the bicycle part is heavenly. Both the suspension and the frame score very well. The CRF is agile and it is wonderful to take short turns with it. Thanks to the progressive rear shock absorber, there is good traction. Furthermore, I wasn't really fond of the hard clutch.”
Thierry Sarasyn (test driver for Motorwereld)
General impression: “The CRF may be the easiest 450 on the market. Not only because it remains below the 50 hp limit, but because the power is well spread and the geometry is excellent. You immediately feel at home on the Honda and the chassis is very forgiving. It is less extreme than, for example, the KTM and the Yamaha, because it is so easy to drive, you can get around just as quickly.”
