Renewed Kemea Yamaha starts this weekend in Riola Sardo!
This weekend the European motocross season gets underway in Riola Sardo, Italy. The Kemea Yamaha Team will of course also be present in Sardinia. A 'new look' Kemea, because the team of Hans Corvers and Marnicq Bervoets underwent a extreme makeover in the winter. Kemea is presenting a completely new line-up this year.
Vsevolod Brylyakov (22) is the spearhead of the team. The Russian is flanked in the MX2 World Championship by the British Ben Watson (20) and the Belgian youngster Jago Geerts (17, world junior 125cc champion in 2016). All three riders will be in action on their YZ250F in Riola Sardo on Sunday. After that, two more preparatory matches in Hawkstone Park (February 11) and Lacapelle Marival (18-2) are scheduled. The world championship will start on March 4 in Neuquen, Argentina.
Hans Corvers, team owner: “We have made great strides with Kemea in recent years. From private team to factory team. From sub-top to top. Benoit Paturel gave us third place in the World Cup in 2016 and last season he gave Kemea a first GP victory, in Switzerland. You can safely describe 2018 as a new start, with three new drivers. Quite a challenge, but we remain ambitious. With Vsevolod Brylyakov we are again aiming for the top 3. He comes back from a long way after a serious shoulder injury, but has the good mentality and the speed. With the help of team trainer Jacky Vimond and team manager Marnicq Bervoets, we should be able to push the Russian to a higher level. Ben Watson should be able to break into the top 8. For Jago Geert, 2018 is more of a learning year. He is a man for the future. Jago still combines his sport with school and will not be able to participate in motocross on a fully professional basis until the end of 2018. Although I see him breaking into the top 10 here and there.”
Marnicq Bervoets, team manager: “The preparation did not go completely optimally. Both Brylyakov and Watson had to interrupt their training camp in Sardinia due to injuries. Brylyakov was struggling with back problems and had to rest for ten days. Watson hit his head on the steering wheel. Result: torn lip and a few loose teeth. He was not allowed to drive for ten days. Fortunately, those injuries are now a thing of the past. I hope those ten days without training won't have too much influence. Geerts, who is still going to school, has continued to train in Belgium and is making a solid impression. Yet it is now difficult to estimate how far we have come. We will know more after the three preparatory matches. We have now reached the top with Kemea. That was difficult, but confirmation may be even more difficult. Yet that is our goal this year.”
