Coldenhoff's victory not enough for the title
A victory during the final of the KNMV Dutch Masters of Motocross 500cc was not enough for Glenn Coldenhoff to take the title. The Brabander won the race at the Rhenen circuit with a second and first place. Romain Febvre (1-4) comes second on 'Circuit Kwintelooyen' ahead of Brent Van Donink (4-2). Calvin Vlaanderen finished third in both rounds and took the title with a three-point difference over 'The Hoff', succeeding Arminas Jasikonis who won the title in 2019.
1e some
Coldenhoff was fastest in training, but the sprint to the first corner was won by Febvre. The Frenchman wins the Ecomaxx Holeshot Award for Coldenhoff and Flanders. In the first lap Van Doninck joins the leading group and passes Flanders. After about ten minutes the Gebben Van Venrooy rider passes and that is not without contact, causing Van Doninck to drop back to fourth place. A little later the rider from Herentals loses the connection after a mistake. The battle is fierce at the front because Febvre, Coldenhoff and Flanders do not lose sight of each other. These MXGP riders go around the MARCO Rhenen circuit like a train of three wagons. In the last lap it is still exciting because Coldenhoff tries to surprise Febvre in the last corner, but that just doesn't work. Coldenhoff comes second for Flanders. Despite a slide, Van Doninck managed to finish fourth ahead of Sven van der Mierden.
2e some
Due to the heat, the competition management has decided to shorten the matches by 5 minutes. Flanders reacts very well when the starting gate drops, but Febvre and Van Doninck come out of the first right corner shoulder to shoulder. The Belgian takes the lead while Coldenhoff follows for Flanders and Davy Pootjes. For a moment Van Doninck seems to be taking some distance, but after Coldenhoff takes over second place from Febvre, the Belgian loses his lead. The 31-year-old Coldenhoff takes the lead while Febvre sees Flanders pass due to a machine problem. That's enough for the title for the born South African! Coldenhoff wins ahead of Van Doninck and Flanders celebrates. Febvre can still cross the finish line in fourth ahead of Freek van der Vlist.
Next time:
The championship is over, the new champion has been announced. The riders will focus on the remaining EMX and World Championship competitions. The KNMV will, and must, work for this championship in 2023. We can say that this strong series has lost a lot of allure after two seasons without competitions.
