Max Anstie will not participate in today's races in Imola!
Max Anstie will soon not be behind the starting gate. The Brit himself announced this via his social media. The Standing Construct pilot had had “a little” pain around and on his shoulder blade since his fall at the start of the Grand Prix in Lommel. Pain that the Brit expected would fade away.
Unfortunately for the young man, the pain got worse yesterday and, as an added bonus, he also found himself short of breath after the qualifying series. Photos and scans were then taken, based on the text and explanation in the Instagram post, we assume that these were taken in Youthstream's mobile medical unit. After these scans, the Standing Construct pilot was told that he had to go to hospital because he suffered a pneumothorax during his fall in Lommel.
What is a pneumothorax?
Colloquially, a pneumothorax is also sometimes called a collapsed lung. We talk about a pneumothorax as soon as the person in question has air trapped between his lung and his chest wall. You can develop a collapsed lung spontaneously, due to your medical history or due to trauma. The latter is the issue with Max Anstie. During the blow he received in the crash in Lommel, air escaped, as Max himself said on Instagram, probably through a mini crack. Air that, among other things, exerted pressure on his shoulder and shoulder blade, which made him think it was a muscle or orthopedic problem rather than a collapsed lung.
In any case, this puts Max Anstie's series victory in a new light. Because even though you have collapsed lungs and pneumothoraxes in different levels of severity, patients are usually banned from sports for a minimum of 14 days. However, this guy was back at the start two hours later to win a series in the toughest grand prix of the season.
