VLM Vorselaar: Van Massenhoven wins blown-out classic
The strong wind and rain were unfortunately also a spoilsport in Vorselaar. Due to the heavy gusts of wind, the only safe choice was to cancel the remaining heats later in the afternoon. At the Inters 500, Wouter Van Massenhoven 'stormed' to victory ahead of the surprising Roy Sillien. Kevin Schellens took victory in the quarter liters.
Nearly 250 (courageous) riders came to the Sassenhout circuit in Vorselaar. In the timed training, Van Massenhoven set the tone for Jens Van Meer and Dietger Damiaens. Brent Aerden - sorry for the lame puns - blew away the competition in the 250 class with a nice pole ahead of Dieter Vromans, Jonathan Banken and Greg Smets.
While Damiaens struggled with his starts in Lommel, he is now off to a strong start! Starting in third position, the BMB champion quickly steered his KTM to the front. Unfortunately, Dietger's reign would not last long because he fell hard, hurt his ribs and suffered a serious concussion. Van Massenhoven was handed the leadership on a silver platter. Wouter then controlled the match and won easily ahead of Roy Sillien (MC De Buiting). Sillien had a poor start but fought his way to the front. Mike Vanderstraeten had an even (much) worse start. The class leader of the Fun MX Team clearly felt at ease in Vorselaar. From outside the top 10 he eventually rose to third place ahead of Jens Van Meer, who started poorly but returned well. Steve is back Seronval finished fourth.
Super Schellens in 250
At the finish, Kevin Schellens had less than 20 seconds left over Jonathan Banken after 2,5 minutes of racing. However, there was nothing to criticize about his victory, on the contrary. Kevin led from start to finish and completed a super regular race. Very promising in view of the first Inters test next weekend in Tongerlo. KTM Diga Junior Racing guest rider Emil Weckman came into competition rhythm in Vorselaar and meanwhile took his first podium of the season. Greg Smets choked at the starting gate. Despite the lack of dry driving lines, Greg pulled off one overtaking maneuver after another. Smets even came into second place, but a steering error in a right-angle bend cost him dearly. Ultimately, the BeTeMo rider had to settle for ninth place.
For the sake of completeness, we also mention Matteo Puffet's great victory at the National Open. The former VLM Beloften champion dominated with great dominance over Dean Van Clapdorp and the experienced Marco Briers. The duo Nick Janssens-Thomas Smeuninx took the lead in the sidecars.
