Five minutes with Bas Vaessen
At the beginning of this month the official message finally came that Bas Vaessen is leaving the 114 Motorsports Honda team this season for Hitachi KTM Fueled by Milwaukee. Since he never performed consistently due to injuries in 2018, this will undoubtedly be a crucial year for Vaessen!
Bas was able to get to know his new KTM in ideal conditions in California. This was the first stage in a long campaign for the Limburger who, in addition to the 19 MX2 GPs, also has eight British championship races and the Hawkstone Park International on his calendar this year. After his training camp in the US, he went to Spain to continue his preparation there. Jonathan McCready looked up Baessen for us.
Finally, your deal with Hitachi KTM Fueled by Milwaukee has been announced! Was there really uncertainty because the fans had to wait a long time for an answer?
Bas Vaessen: “Stress or uncertainty was not an issue for me. I know my potential and I was sure I would find a seat. I think I've made some good decisions for the future. That's why I'm very happy with this deal. One of the last GPs someone from Hitachi came to us and said they are interested in me. That's actually how the first contact was made.”
You were in California for quite a long time. That is rather unusual for GP riders. What are the benefits of preparing there?
Vaessen: “I think spending a month in California is a good way to start your preparation. You can spend many hours on the bike, in the gym and on the track. Because of the nice weather you don't have to worry about rain. This is perfect for rebuilding your fitness. So the second part of my preparation is now with the team in Spain in RedSand. In addition to my physical program and motorcycle training, we can also test well here. For example, we have already done suspension tests with WP Suspension.”
What are your first impressions of the KTM compared to the Honda?
Vaessen: “I'm really surprised. Honestly, I was a little tense because I've always ridden Japanese bikes since I've been riding 250s. But I immediately felt at home with the chassis and the bike feels very comfortable. The power feels good in handling and in terms of manageability.”
How do you look back on 2018?
Vaessen: “Of course I'm not really satisfied. I made a lot of mistakes and had a nasty injury after Italy. Although I had some good moments, overall it could have been much better.”
What is your goal now in the World Cup?
Vaessen: “My biggest goal is regularity. For me it comes down to being 'solid' for a whole year. I want to be able to compete with the top everywhere and my goal now is to reach the top 5 in every GP.”
Yes it also starts the British Championship, it's going to be a busy year for you!
Vaessen: “Yes, I now have almost 30 races on my calendar! I have no idea what to expect in the British Championship other than doing what is expected of me. That means I'm going for the title.”
In which preparatory matches can we expect you?
“I'm racing the Hawkstone International on February 17th. (laughing) I at least hope it won't snow this time!”
Would you like to thank someone else?
Vaessen: “First of all, I would like to thank my parents for their support. I'm so happy they have my back. I would also like to thank Roger Magee (ed. team owner Hitachi KTM Fueled by Milwaukee) for this opportunity.”
