IIn a scorching hot and very busy Lommel, Camden McLellan managed to win the MX2 class with a double race victory. He proved to be the better sand rider today and beat his teammate and World Championship leader Guillem Farres. Liam Everts suffered bad luck in the first race, meaning a podium finish was not possible. In the World Championship standings, Guillem Farres extended his lead over Sacha Coenen, who finished sixth in the final standings today.
First series
Home rider Liam Everts took the holeshot, but World Championship leader Guillem Farres took the lead on the opening lap, followed by Everts and Längenfelder. Sacha Coenen crashed early and had to start a major recovery race from P18.
Polesitter Camden McLellan came on strong from sixth place. He passed one competitor after another, including Liam Everts, who retired from the race shortly afterwards due to engine problems. Kay Karssemakers also had to retire due to a defective engine.
McLellan set out to chase leader Farres, who made a few mistakes under pressure and relinquished the lead. McLellan won the series ahead of Längenfelder and Farres, while Coenen fought back impressively to P6 after his crash.
Second series
Guillem Farres shot away from the starting gate like an arrow from a bow. Simon Längenfelder and Liam Everts followed the Spaniard. Sacha Coenen started fourth, ahead of Camden McLellan. The latter stormed past Coenen and Everts in a few laps. Only Farres and Längenfelder were now ahead of him.
During the sixth lap, Karlis Reisulis overtook his brother Janis and took P6. At the front, Simon Längenfelder and Camden McLellan were able to close the gap on leader Guillem Farres. The German then quite boldly pushed Farres aside and took the lead, but McLellan was also alert.
With ten minutes of racing remaining, McLellan appeared on Längenfelder's rear wheel. An initial attack was fended off, but a few laps later the German finally succumbed: Camden McLellan took over the lead. Guillem Farres was the next to overtake Längenfelder, and so the two Triumphs rode in first and second place.
Camden McLellan wins the second race and achieves a perfect score of sixty points by also winning the qualifiers and the first race. It is already the South African's second victory of the season. Guillem Farres, second in race two, also finished second in the overall standings ahead of Simon Längenfelder. The unfortunate Liam Everts finished fifth, while Sacha Coenen took a 7e managed to save the place from the fire.
In the world championship standings, Guillem Farres now leads Sacha Coenen by 47 points.
