DThe fifth round of the MX1GP Brasil in Palmas delivered an intense battle between Glenn Coldenhoff and championship leader Enzo Lopes. Under tropical conditions, the Dutchman ultimately came out on top and claimed his first overall victory of the season.

Lopes started the day as the fastest man from practice and lived up to his role as favorite with a dominant victory in the first race. The Honda Racing rider took the lead early on and held it until the finish.

In the second heat, however, the story turned out completely differently. Fábio Santos shot out of the starting gate first on his Yamaha and took the holeshot. Coldenhoff immediately settled into his slipstream and set off in pursuit. Midway through the race, he found a way past his teammate, after which a fierce battle for the lead ensued. Despite a small mistake, Coldenhoff quickly regained first place and controlled the remainder of the heat.

With a second and a first place, the Yamaha rider collected the same number of points as Lopes, but thanks to his victory in the final race, he was allowed to step onto the top step of the podium as the day's winner.

First overall victory of the season

For Coldenhoff, the victory was a major boost in his Brazilian campaign. The Dutchman also secured Yamaha Racing Brasil's first overall MX1 victory of the season.

“The first heat was tough because my start wasn't good and I had to constantly chase. In the second heat, I was behind Fábio Santos for a long time. When I finally passed him, I made a mistake and lost ground again. I knew I had to react immediately. It was tough racing, but that’s part of motocross. My first overall win of the season feels amazing. Thanks to the team and to my family in the Netherlands who were undoubtedly watching,” Coldenhoff said afterwards.

Lopes maintains comfortable lead

Although the day's victory eluded him, Enzo Lopes continues to do excellent business in the championship. The Brazilian won the opening race convincingly and finished second in the final round. As a result, he maintains a 31-point lead in the MX1 standings after five races.

Major setback for Jeremy Van Horebeek

For Jeremy Van Horebeek, the race turned out to be a disappointment. The Belgian had an excellent start to the day and entered the opening round as the leader. However, his race completely turned around after two crashes. The crashes threw him off his rhythm and had a heavy impact, especially mentally. Van Horebeek ultimately decided not to start the second round.

“I felt good on the bike and was confident, but the crashes hit hard. Mentally, they had even more of an impact than physically. I want to thank the team for all the support,” said the Belgian.

Due to the zero score in the second series, Van Horebeek drops back to seventh place in the standings.

Strong Yamaha day with Santos on the podium

In addition to Coldenhoff, Fábio Santos also had a particularly strong race. The Brazilian rode to a third place twice, achieving his best result of the season. Paulo Alberto, Gregory Aranda, Guilherme Bresolin, and Vitor Borba were also prominently involved in the battle for the top places.

Off to Goania

The Brazilian Championship now moves on to Goiânia, where the sixth round will be held on June 20 and 21. Lopes remains the leader, but Coldenhoff has proven with his first overall victory that he remains a major challenger in the title race.
