DLucati is bringing a revolutionary innovation to the world of off-road motorcycling: predictive maintenance. After having already introduced the first traction control system in motocross capable of accurately determining the actual slip of the rear wheel, the manufacturer from Borgo Panigale has developed a completely new software system for the Desmo 450 MX that calculates maintenance intervals based on the intensity of motorcycle use.
To take advantage of all these new features, fans can simply visit their local Ducati dealer, where the ECU can be updated for free.
Based on its experience in Superbike and MotoGP, Ducati Corse has developed a specific algorithm for the Desmo450 MX that calculates an engine load index in real time, based on operating parameters and usage conditions. This index also takes into account the type of terrain being ridden and continuously increases the engine's percentage wear counter. The system then uses this counter to update the maintenance schedules, which can be viewed via the Ducati X-Link app.

In this way, inspection and maintenance intervals are tailored to the rider's riding style, with more frequent maintenance for professional or intensive use and less frequent maintenance for amateur users. This moves away from traditional, fixed maintenance schedules. If the engine load is lower than anticipated in the maintenance interval calculation — based on Alessandro Lupino's usage — a service can be postponed.
This results in a financial benefit for the customer and ensures longer intervals between maintenance services. It is a completely different approach from competing brands, which use an interval schedule based on the number of operating hours.
The interval for the MID Service, during which the piston is replaced and the valve clearance is checked, can therefore vary between 45 and 60 hours, depending on the actual wear of the engine. Similarly, a complete engine overhaul (FULL Service) can take place between 90 and 120 hours.
- A revolutionary algorithm, developed by Ducati Corse, determines maintenance intervals based on the actual intensity of motorcycle use.
- With the X-Link app, available on iOS and Android, you can check maintenance due dates in real time.
- The feature is activated via a free software update.
