HUnter Lawrence put the icing on the cake for Team Australia with his second race win of the day. Brother Jett finished third behind a strong Eli Tomac. The Yamaha veteran thus pulled out all the stops for Team USA, who took silver. The French finished third.

Jo Shimoda kicked off the combined MXGP + Open race. Coenen was also immediately at the front, as were Hunter Lawrence and Liam Everts. Jett Lawrence made two mistakes in the opening stages. The second mishap dropped him to 13th place.

Hunter, however, wasted no time at the front. First, Coenen was dropped, and then Shimoda was also dropped. Lucas gave the Belgian fans hope with an overtaking maneuver on the Japanese. Initially, Coenen held his own against Lawrence, but on the 7th lap, he overshot the mark. This dropped him to ninth, forced Gifting to retire, and he would never recover.

In his first race weekend on the 450cc, Everts once again showed that the bigger bike suits him perfectly. Until halfway through the race, 'Liamski' was even in 4th place. He only had to give way to an advancing Tomac. With RJ Hampshire continuing to pile up mistakes and even retiring, the fate of home country America lay in Tomac's hands. ET wouldn't disappoint with an excellent 2nd place.

Tim Gajser rode strongly to the front from just inside the top 10. He was unable to defend against Jett Lawrence but still finished a respectable 4th, ahead of Romain Febvre and Shimoda. Everts finished 7th in his second race of the day. This earned the Nestaan Husqvarna rider 3rd place in the individual "Open" standings.

With an unprecedented young team of two 18-year-old riders (Lucas and Sacha Coenen) and one 21-year-old rider (Liam Everts), Belgium finished a creditable 4th in the final standings. Had it not been for Sacha's bad luck, a podium finish would certainly have been possible. However bitter the disappointment of missing out on a medal may be, it's clear that Belgium will be competing for prizes in the motocross of nations in the coming years. The last Belgian MX of Nations podium finish was in 2019 in Assen, the Netherlands.
