DThe Lugo GP in Spain last weekend was Jeffrey Herlings’ fifth race since his comeback in Riola Sardo in early April. The pace is high with these consecutive GPs, but the five-time world champion continues to make progress towards his old top level step by step. In Lugo, the Dutchman blasted to a strong sixth place – despite poor starts and difficult weather conditions – and showed that he is closing in on the top five.
“The feeling is getting better and better. Today I’m sixth… the next step is top-5, and then the podium,” Herlings said Sunday night in Lugo. “The weather wasn’t on our side today, and in the last two GPs we were unlucky with the mud. But I’m already looking forward to the next GP in Ernée. Lugo wasn’t my best GP, but it wasn’t bad either. You have to remember where we came from! Against the best riders in the premier class of motocross, this is definitely okay. We have to work on better starts to gain some more confidence, and then we’ll really be there.”
Herlings keeps his feet on the ground. His honesty about where he is now and what still needs to be done, shows his professionalism and perseverance once again. The Dutchman, who has always believed in his abilities despite injuries, knows: back to the top? You do that step by step.
