Dhe unexpected 2 MX2023 world champion Andrea Adamo left Portugal as the big winner. In both the qualifying race and in both motos today the Italian was the best. World championship leader Kay De Wolf finished second (3-3) ahead of Simon Längenfelder (2-4). For Liam Everts it was a GP to forget quickly.
The MX2 opening moto v started with a cracking start from Liam Everts, his second holeshot of the season. Sascha Coenen was right behind him, with Adamo and De Wolf in hot pursuit. De Wolf crept past Adamo to P3 with Camden McLellan on his wheel. A few corners later Everts crashed and Coenen took over the lead. De Wolf moved up to P2, Adamo followed in third.
But then the spectacle began: De Wolf crashed, quickly got back up, and tried to hold off McLellan on the outside – touched his wheel and the Triump rider went down! Shortly after, Oliver Oriol also crashed from fourth position. Not much later, race leader Sacha Coenen made a spectacular somersault over the handlebars. That gave Langenfelder the chance to overtake De Wolf and move up to P2. The German fought a fierce duel with reigning world champion De Wolf until the finish.
Coenen crashed again, this time on the finish jump. Quentin Marc Prugnieres Prunier took his best MX2 result so far in 4th, Rick Elzinga finished a neat 5th. Despite the 10th holeshot of Liamski's career, he never found his groove. After his early fall, the NEstaan Husqvarna factory rider had to come back from last position. He eventually finished 1st.
Adamo out of category
Andrea Adamo also had a great start in the second manche. Completely off the right side, he was the first to storm into the left opening bend, with Coenen and Langenfelder in his wake. Langenfelder immediately put pressure on, but crashed just when he had a view of the lead. A crucial moment, because the World Championship lead was at stake!
Adamo rode in a controlled lead, until Sacha Coenen took over the lead in the 4th round. In the meantime, De Wolf moved up to P3, where he would also remain. In round seven, Adamo struck again and took over the lead for good! Zanchi made a small mistake and dropped back from P6 to P8, while De Wolf limited himself to consolidating his podium place. For season revelation Cas Valk, the second series could still bring some relief. After dropping out in race 1, the Van Venrooy Racing driver now finished 6th. Rick Elzinga now finished 13th while Nicolas Vennekens collected two more WC points.
In the MX2 World Championship standings, Adamo is closing in on De Wolf to within 10 points, while Längenfelder remains second in the standings. Liam Everts, 18th in the GP, lost valuable ground in the title fight this weekend.
