NAfter the first two rounds in the north, the French Sables Championship headed south this weekend to Hossegor-Capbreton in the Landes region for what was the third event of the season. Cyril Genot, who took a stunning all-round victory over Todd Kellett on the sands of Loon-Plage a month ago, arrived in Hossegor with the red card of provisional leader and the firm intention of confirming his grip on the championship.
While Jérémy Hauquier got off to the best start, it was Todd Kellett who quickly took control of the race and built up a comfortable lead over his pursuers. After just one hour of racing, the British rider was already more than three minutes ahead of the number 1 Honda and the FFM officials.
The gap only widened as the laps went by, with the two-time beach racing world champion demoting Genot to almost a lap down. Behind the two championship leaders, Mathéo Miot took third place on the podium, with Joey Nuques ahead of Jeremy Hauquier in sixth, Jeremy Knuiman, Maxime Sot, Daymond Martens, Florian Miot and Yentel Martens rounding out the top ten.
Tias Callens finished 15th and Junior Bal 20th. Mattéo Puffet had to give up before halfway. Good old André Vossius finished 367th, he is now listed as 40th in the veteran class. Vossius also finished third in the final standings of the FIM Sand Races World Cup with this race.
Lars Van Berkel also dropped out in the final laps of the race, just when the Dutchman was aiming for the podium. In the women's category, the victory went again to our compatriot Amandine Verstappen.
With this second win of the season, Todd Kellett takes over the lead in the provisional standings and now holds the sole lead of the French Sand Championship ahead of the 4th round of the season next weekend in Saint-Léger de Balson. Kellett previously won the 2024 FIM Sand race World Cup.
Juniors
Earlier today there was also the Juniors race. That was won by Damien Knuiman. Paolo Maschio came second ahead of Tom Caneele. Scott Verhoeven came fifth.
