Suzuki unveiled the EICMA in Milan this morning new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM revealed. It concerns a new generation of the dual sport DR-Z400 and the derived supermotard. The predecessor of this model was not available in Europe for a while.
VBy 2025, the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM will receive Euro 5+ approval. But the innovations don't stop there!
Advanced Twin
The steel frame is completely new, with a double wedge structure. In addition, both models are equipped with KYB suspension that is adjustable in terms of spring travel and compression. In terms of electronics, there is a multi-map ride by wire, adjustable traction control and ABS, which can be switched off at the rear on the SM and on both wheels on the S.
The other differences between the two models are of course the wheels – 21 and 18” for the dual sport, both wheels 17” for the supermotard version. Of course, the front brake disc has also been modified (read larger and floating) for the SM version. The engine block is identical: a single-cylinder with double overhead camshafts, dual ignition and five-speed gearbox with slip clutch, good for 38 hp at 8.000 rpm and 37 Nm at 6.500 rpm. The unladen weight is 151 kg for the S and 154 kg for the SM.
Electronica
The DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM are both equipped with the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System. Among the riding aids is the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) system with three power selections. A provides the most direct response and full torque for maximum performance, while B and C reduce the initial power for better grip in slippery conditions.
In addition, Suzuki also offers two traction control modes and a special G mode for off-road, which allows for controlled wheel spin for those who want to ride more competitively. The off-road-oriented DR-Z4S can also count on a modified G mode that works on different types of obstacles, such as hills. The DR-Z4SM has a version that fits in with a dynamic supermoto feeling. Last but not least, both “Suzis” come with ABS as standard.
Although the Dual Sport models are doing well in the US - it remains to be seen whether the DR-Z4's will also catch on here. In terms of looks and specifications, it's fine!
