In last week we looked ahead to the quaduro of Le Touquet with Auke Theuninck. Now we ask the same guy how his race in Le Touquet went! Auke: “After all the technical problems we had experienced in the run-up to Le Touquet we had chosen to start with a standard engine block. That's why I was a bit scared of the start. But it went well, I got away around 15th.” The race went well for Theuninck from then on. He said that on the cross section his engine worked more than adequately and that places could be gained there. But due to the lack of speed in the standard block these places were quickly lost again on the typical fast straight in Touquet.
But after an hour the real typical potholes appeared in the course, speed became less important and the typical technique of the sand rider emerged. After the pit stop, which also took place around the hour mark, I moved further to the front and was in fifth place, two hours into the race. A place that I should normally have been in had it not been for the fact that I got enormous cramps in my right forearm. To make matters worse, I also had a puncture on the penultimate lap, so I had to settle for sixth place.
It was a very tough competition and all in all I am very satisfied with the result! Beforehand I had proposed a top 10 place and if everything went well a top 5. So with a 6th place I absolutely cannot complain and I am more than satisfied!”
