VNOS is looking for witnesses to the 'petrol tap incident' for the programme Andere Tijden Sport. In 1987, two Dutchmen, Dave Strijbos and John van den Berk, are involved in a battle for the world championship motocross. The sporting battle takes a venomous turn during the Grand Prix of Valkenswaard.
Crash
In a bend, the engines of both fighting cocks collide. The two become entangled and they cannot free the machines. With the help of supporters, the two seem to be able to continue on their way, until it turns out that Van den Berk's fuel tap has been turned off. To this day, it is not known what exactly happened in that bend on April 5, 1987. It had no dramatic consequences for Van den Berk; he still won the world title. But 'the petrol tap incident' was never solved.
Supporters, images
Were you standing in this famous bend? Or do you know people who were present at this competition? In addition, the editors of Andere Tijden Sport are looking for images of this incident. Did you record the broadcast of this race?
