MX legend Joël Smets (43) has been in the hospital in Herentals for a month now, including 2 weeks in intensive care, with a bacterial infection. Things finally seem to be looking up for Smetske. “A new blood test will follow tomorrow, if it is positive he might be able to go home on Saturday,” his owner Nancy said. “It is high time because everyone is starting to miss him very much now, even our two dogs!”

Joël still has a long recovery ahead of him. Typical of the super professional that he is, he has already turned on the Compex to stimulate his muscles as much as possible. As the brand new coach of the Suzuki factory riders Clément Desalle and Kevin Strijbos, he has to miss part of the preparation. By the first races in February, Smets wants to be mobile enough to follow his men closely.
