NAfter a resounding double victory last weekend on home soil, Jonathan Barragan and his team were keen on a strong Swedish Grand Prix. The 9th GP of the World Championship, which was held in Uddevalla, was disappointing for Barragan. After a twelfth and thirteenth place, he finished twelfth in the final standings.
Due to the erratic weather conditions, rain showers and sunshine alternated, the circuit was treacherous on Saturday. From 17th place behind the starting gate, Jonathan completed a good qualifying race. He started just outside the top 10 and eventually managed to send his CRF450R across the finish line in eighth place. As a result, the multiple Spanish champion was at the start the next day with the necessary confidence. On Sunday the circuit was very muddy after continuous rain. More than 22.000 spectators watched the MX1 riders start their first race of the day just after noon. After a weak start and a crash, the hard-working Spaniard had to come back far. After the opening lap Jonathan was 20th, gradually working his way up to 12th.
A second fall of the day, at the start of the second moto, again threw a spanner in the works for Barragan. Jonathan was only in 25th position during the initial phase, which meant he faced an even tougher task. Yet he was not discouraged. In the meantime, the track had almost dried up, but the slippery surface in some places and the heavy ruts in other strips tested the driving skills of the pilots. In the second half of the race, the LS Honda Racing rider managed to climb to 13th place, but the gap with De Reuver was too big. Barragan also finished 13th. In the World Cup standings he is now 14th, 8 points behind 12th Sébastien Pourcel.
Jonathan Barragan: “It didn't go well today. I fell in the second moto and the first laps of the other moto were just bad. It's a pity that I crashed so early in the second race because there could certainly have been more to it than thirteenth place. My rhythm was good, but the speed was lacking. Unfortunately there was nothing more. Both myself and the team work very hard. So far we have simply not been able to achieve the results we had in mind. It took us a lot of effort to get into the top 8, although it was certainly not due to our efforts or the will to perform.”
