DThe Latvian Grand Prix in Kegums, 40 km south-east of the capital Riga, next weekend will be the last in a tough period of three consecutive GPs. This race is also the last before the short summer break. After the atmospheric German Grand Prix, the LS Honda riders and their colleagues can prepare themselves for an enthusiastic reception by the local MX fans. The Baltic race also has an emotional value for the Belgian Honda team, as Kegums was the scene of their first MX1 moto victory two years ago.
Although the subsoil appears sandy at first glance, the soil in Kegums has a very special, fine and loose composition. The sand is rather loamy and very different from Lommel or Valkenswaard. Unlike last weekend in Teutschenthal, there are few height differences, but Kegums does offer a number of technical challenges with many jumps and it is a fast, physical track that also becomes increasingly difficult as the weekend progresses. While the Latvian GP is a fairly recent addition to the motocross solo World Championship calendar - this year marks its third edition - it can still count on a lot of support among riders.
One of the drivers who enjoys traveling to Latvia is Ken De Dycker. Keeno achieved his best result in 2009 when he took pole in qualifying and finished 5th in the final standings. Although De Dycker gradually became faster this season and was often close, he is still chasing his first podium of the season. LS Honda's British rider Shaun Simpson has had a weekend with mixed feelings in Germany. Shaun confirmed his undeniable talent and speed on Saturday but he is hungrier than ever to put in an equally strong performance on race day.
Ken Dycker: “I love Kegums. As a rider you just know that this is one of the circuits where you can have fun. There are many jumps, but it is also rough with holes and bumps. This week I made sure that I took enough rest to arrive at the start fresh and sharp! In Teutschenthal it unfortunately became a bit more difficult to make a good start because it was very tight just after the start. Hopefully I'll find a gap in that perpendicular right-hand bend this weekend. I've said it before, but if I come away among the leaders, it means a world of difference to me.”
Shaun Simpson: “My speed is good, so I know I need that little bit extra in the early laps to score two top ten finishes this time. As far as the job goes I don't really know what to expect. The layout in Kegums itself looks cool; there are some nice jumps and it is just a bit different from the other circuits on the World Cup calendar. Last year I had difficulty finding my way there. In some places it is quite fast and slippery. Good lines and of course a good start will be crucial this weekend.”
